The Story

The brief

The yard at this Dry Creek Ranch homesite in Eagle was large and flat, with the foothills beyond it. The owners asked for a complete outdoor living space, with separate zones for gathering, relaxing, play and their dogs.

The design

One paver patio ties the zones together, in a multi-tone slate blend of warm golds, cool grays and deep charcoals drawn from the foothills around it. A circular conversation area anchors the middle of the yard inside a soldier-course border, and a broader rectangular patio links the seating, the waterfall and the back door. The dog run sits on the edge of the yard, which keeps the main patio clean and open.

The build

The fire pit is a single amber onyx boulder, sourced, brought in and core-drilled on site for a round gas burner filled with black lava rock. Along the back of the patio, a stacked ledger-stone wall between slate-capped pillars holds a stainless steel blade spillway that sheets water into a river rock basin. Every zone was graded for drainage before the pavers went down, and the dog run was planned around drainage from the start.

Living in it

The sound of the water reaches every seat on the patio and masks the noise around it. Xeriscape beds of river rock, boulders, drought-tolerant evergreens, ornamental grasses and perennial shrubs frame the paving on every side, and look good all year without constant watering.

What made it work

Three Decisions That Shaped It.

  • A Boulder, Not a KitCore-drilling one amber onyx boulder for the gas burner gave the patio a centerpiece that can't be bought off a shelf, with a second boulder as a side table to match.
  • Water You Hear From Every SeatThe waterfall wall closes the back of the patio, and the sound of its spillway carries to every seat, masking the noise around the yard.
  • A Run of Their OwnSetting the dog run on the edge of the yard, planned around drainage, gives the dogs a safe space and keeps the main patio clean and open.
