A Fire Circle, After Ancient Gathering Places.

A round concrete court with a fire pit at its center and built-in seating in weathered-look stone curving around it, designed and built by our team in a Boise backyard.

Scope
Round concrete court, fire pit, curved built-in seating, drought-tolerant planting
The site
A simple backyard in Boise

The Story

The brief

The aim for this simple Boise backyard was a place made for gathering. The design draws on ancient gathering places: a circle, with the fire at its center.

The design

Everything follows the circle. The fire pit is the focal point, and built-in seating curves around it, its height and placement set for comfort and for the warmth of the fire. A circle has no head of the table, so the conversation includes everyone.

The build

Stone selection set the character. We chose materials for durability and a weathered, timeless look, and placed each stone to suggest age without giving up structural integrity. Drought-tolerant plants and natural materials finish the surroundings, with interest all year and little upkeep.

What made it work

Three Decisions Around the Fire.

  • Everyone Around the FireThe round plan puts the fire at the center and everyone around it, with no head of the table.
  • Seating Built InCurved seating follows the circle, its height and placement set for comfort and for the warmth of the fire.
  • Stone Chosen for AgeMaterials picked for a weathered, timeless look, placed stone by stone to suggest age while staying structurally sound.
